In the highlands of Vereda Santa Inés, Pitalito, Huila, Elsa Benavides has dedicated over 40 years to coffee, beginning as a picker at just 12 years old alongside her parents. Over time, coffee became more than a livelihood—it became a way to build well-being for her family and community.
Elsa’s sharp rise in quality is heavily credited to her involvement with PECA, the educational and grower-training program run by green coffee exporter Caravela Coffee. Through this program, she perfected a highly meticulous natural processing method.
Today, her farm reflects both quality and family unity, with children, grandchildren, and in-laws involved in every step of production. Supported by her work with Caravela, Elsa continues to grow her project, proud of the recognition she has achieved and the legacy she is building together with her family.
Elsa uses her success to give back to her community. She prioritises paying her seasonal pickers a fair living wage and offers consistent, stable employment to her extended family members.
